Joan of Arc by Princess Marie d’Orléans
MARIE D’ORLEANS (Palermo 1813-1839 Pisa)
Jeanne d’Arc
Bronze
Fonderie mark Susse Freres
H : 30 cm
Marie d’Orléans was the daughter of King Louis Philippe, who reigned in France between 1830 and 1848. She died young, age 26, leaving an important corpus of sculptures. She was a Romantic sculptor ‘par excellence’ moving in the heart of Paris’ artistic life in the 1830’s. Taking lessons from the famous painter Ary Scheffer she became a very accomplished artist.
The Jeanne d’Arc is her most distributed work, many examples exist after the life-size Marble statue in Versailles. This present bonze, cast by Susse Frères is of an exceptional quality, entirely reworked and beautifully patinated.
